International students and Income Tax. Why file??

What Money Do I Get Back? Three basic tax concepts that will apply to international students. Refunding Income Tax - If you worked in Canada in 2011, you may have had to pay income tax on your wages. If your income isn’t very high, or you are eligible for tax credits, you may likely be eligible to receive a refund on part (or perhaps all) of the income tax that you paid. On the other hand, if you did not work and pay income tax, you shouldn’t be looking forward to an income tax refund. This is one reason to file a tax return. Goods and Services Tax Credit - Another reason for filing a tax return is that, at the same time, you can apply for the GST credit. Eligible applicants are entitled to receive the base amount of $253.00, which is split up into a few separate payments over the coming year. You do not necessarily have to be working to qualify for this credit. Education and Tuition Amount - By far, the most important reason for you to be filing a tax return is to claim your education and tuition credits. While these credits do not translate into instant ‘cash back’, you will be able to hold on to them until some point in the future when you start working. Even if you don’t work in Canada until some point 10 years in the future, the Education amounts that you claim now will become the reason that you will be “Refunding Income Tax” from future earnings in Canada. These credits could mean thousands of dollars to you in the future, and really are the biggest reason for filing taxes. Adapted from: U OF A E-Weekly Newsletter
