Inbound Exchange Students

The University of Saskatchewan welcomes exchange students. Students on exchange from another university may study at the University of Saskatchewan for a maximum of one academic year, paying tuition to their home institution only.

Admission Requirements

Students studying at one of University of Saskatchewan’s partner institutions can apply to the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) as an exchange student. Eligibility to participate in an exchange program with the U of S is initially determined by your home university. Please contact the Study Abroad Advisor at your home institution.

If the language of study at your home institution is not English, you must meet the English proficiency requirements set by the U of S for international students.

Exchange students must maintain full-time student status, meaning a minimum of three courses per term. The maximum number of courses an exchange student may take per term is five.

Application

The deadline for applications is May 1st. Exchange students can expect their acceptance/admission letter from the U of S within eight weeks of the application deadline. You will require this letter to apply for a Canadian study permit.

If you wish to apply to the U of S on exchange,  contact your home institution to receive the appropriate application form. Exchange students may apply to study at the U of S for one or two semesters. The study period should be clearly specified on the application form.

The U of S requires the following documents from students applying to study:

  1. University of Saskatchewan Application for Inbound Exchange Students (Application for 2012-2013 will be posted in February 2012)
  2. Demonstration of English proficiency
  3. A transcript of academic records

All documents should be mailed or faxed to:

Study Permit

Consider applying for a study permit if study is less then 6 months.

Students who will be studying at the U of S for only one term, may find that the Canadian Embassy will indicate a study permit is not needed because the length of time in Canada is for less than six months.  You are encouraged to ask for the study permit , benefits are:

  • If you decide to continue studying in Canada and having a study permit you can request a renewal within Canada
  • you may also be entitled to additional health coverage in Saskatchewan when you hold a study permit
  • you may be permitted to work on campus

Students will receive a letter of admission from the University of Saskatchewan.  This letter is required when applying for a  study permit  at your local visa office.

Inbound Exchange Student Health Care

If you are studying at the U of S for one full year, you will receive a study permit.  This study permit will allow you access to free health coverage in Saskatchewan.  However, it will not include dental insurance nor will it cover all medical procedures.  You should obtain extensive health and international travel insurance prior to arriving in Canada.  A portion of your student fees covers health and dental insurance.  If you bring comprehensive coverage from home, you can waive this insurance fee within the first two weeks of classes.  To be able to waive the fee, you will have to present a copy of your insurance policy.

If you are studying at the U of S for one term, you may not have access to the free health coverage in Saskatchewan. You should obtain extensive health and international travel insurance prior to arriving in Canada.

Travel and work after your studies

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) has negotiated agreements with several countries for travel and working in Canada. Through these partnerships, international young participants can easily obtain a temporary work permit and gain professional and personal experience in Canada. A list of eligible countries is listed on DFAIT website.

You should apply for these programs prior to leaving your home country to Canada. Give yourself enough time to apply for the required work permit under these programs.
