Commonly Asked Questions
I'm thinking about an exchange but....
My major isn't really "international". What could I study abroad?
You don't need to have an "international" major to study abroad. Students who participate in study abroad and student exchange programs take classes to fulfill their major, minor and elective requirements.
I don't speak a second language. Can I still study abroad?
Most of our partner institutions offer courses in English. For more information about specfic institutions and their language requirements, go to Where can I go? - Choose a Country.
Isn't it expensive?
Student Exchange is one of the most affordable ways to see the world. Students pay U of S tuition, airfare, accommodation, food and other incidental costs. Just think - one month's rent in a student dormitory might be the equivalent of four nights accommodation in a hotel.
I can't find a program that interests me...
If, you can't find a U of S program that is of interest to you, there are opportunities for independent study options. Contact your college or a Study Abroad Advisor for more information.
When should I start planning to study abroad?
It's never too early to start planning. Ideally a year in advance of your departure allows sufficient time for thorough planning and preparation. however, applying early in the semester preceding your departure is absolutely essential. Some study abroad programs require you to apply a year in advance of the program.
If you are interested in a program that will be conducted in a language other than English, it is a good idea to begin language preparation as early as possible.
