Present a Positive First Impression
Many people form their opinion of others based on their first impression.
These opinions can be very difficult to change. You must deliver a positive
first impression in an interview, because you will not have a second
chance to change the interviewer’s opinion.
Dress for Success
- Dress for the occupation. Wear to the interview what others in
the workplace or industry wear. If you are unsure as to the formality
of the workplace, visit the organization and observe what others in
similar positions are wearing.
- Pay attention to personal grooming—neat hair, clean and manicured
nails, ironed clothes, polished shoes.
- Keep jewelry simple and conservative.
- Avoid heavy fragrances.
- Sit down after getting dressed. If you are uncomfortable and feel
you will tend to fidget during the interview, change into something
more comfortable.
Be Punctual
- Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the interview. Arriving late
shows a lack of respect for the interviewer and gives the impression
that you will not arrive on time for work.
- If you are unsure of the exact location of the interview, take
a trial run to determine how best to get there, how long it takes,
where to park your car, etc.
Be Friendly and Courteous
- Be friendly and courteous to all people that you meet. How you
fit into the organization's "team" will be noticed. Often,
employers will ask receptionists and others for their impression of
you after your interview.
- Smile, give a firm handshake and keep a positive attitude.
