Orientation for new students

Across the Saskatoon campus
 Open to new students in the colleges of Agriculture and Bioresources, Arts and Science, Education, Edwards School of Business, Engineering, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, Kinesiology and St. Thomas More.

Orientation is a daylong event where you can make friends, get familiar with campus and learn about your college. We strongly encourage all new students to attend Orientation.

At AgBio’s session you will get a chance to hear from the dean of the college, Dr. Mary Buhr, and the Agriculture Students Association (ASA). The ASA will present on behalf of multiple student clubs and will discuss membership opportunities. You will also learn the ins and outs from senior students, which will set the stage for your success as a student and eventually as an AgBio graduate! We want you to have a smooth transition to university life and have planned this orientation to introduce you to academic services, social and recreational activities and facilities available to you, both at your college and throughout the university.

This session will focus on learning more about the College of Arts and Science, specifically where common first year classrooms, buildings and services are located. Students will compete in a photo scavenger hunt with the app Goose Chase for a chance to win prizes. The session will wrap up with some important reminders and tips to help you have a successful year. Come out, meet some new friends, win some prizes, learn more and start your semester on the right foot!

Experience for yourself all that the Edwards School of Business has to offer! During this session you will learn:

  • what to expect during your first year,
  • the different majors you will choose between in your second year, and
  • the diverse program options available to you throughout your degree (e.g. the co-op program, study abroad, the global business stream, and the honours program).

You will also hear from the dean of the college, Dr. Keith Willoughby, followed by the Edwards Business Students’ Society (EBSS). The EBSS will present on behalf of multiple student groups and will discuss membership opportunities.

Take this opportunity to get to know the college, meet with other engineering students, and become familiar with the services available to you. We will have a short program to welcome you to the college, a tips and tricks session from students, and a design challenge.

Your orientation kicks off with a morning welcome from Dean Trever Crowe. Get the lowdown on academic regulations, scholarship and bursary information as well as support services available to you throughout your graduate studies. Presentations take place in room 271, Thorvaldson Building.

11:30 am – 12:30 pm: University welcome and induction
The PAC

A complimentary lunch of pizza and a drink will be served when you first enter the PAC. Gluten-sensitive, halal, vegetarian, vegan, and meat pizza options will be provided.

After lunch, everone will receive a U of S shirt, and university leaders will welcome all new students to campus. 


12:30 – 3 pm: Activities in The Bowl
 
The Bowl

Get comfortable on campus and make some friends by participating in activities in The Bowl, the centre of campus. Thanks to our entertrainment sponsor, SaskTel, the first 100 students get a free picnic blanket, and all attendees can enter for a chance to win a free phone!

  • Campus Expo (tables around The Bowl): Learn about on-campus student services, academic programming, and student groups/societies
  • Food trucks, including SoomSoom, Nomnom and Dickie Dee's
  • Bombargo concert, sponsored by SaskTel 
  • Photobooth, games, prizes and free stuff!

1 – 1:45 pm and 2 – 2:45 pm: Campus tours

  • Find my classroom tour: Learn the names of buildings on campus and where hard-to-find classrooms are located.
  • Student services tour: Learn where to access student services, like the Student Wellness Centre, Shop usask Bookstore and Student Central.

Aboriginal Students' Centre New Student Welcome

 August 30 – 31, 2018

Métis, First Nations and Inuit students are also encouraged to attend the Aboriginal Students' Centre New Student Welcome. The welcome begins the morning of Thursday, Aug. 30 and ends in the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 31. Meals and accommodation are provided. Learn more and sign up.  If you attend this welcome, you should also attend Orientation on September 4.

Students who are new to Canada are also encouraged to attend the Welcome for International Students on Friday, Aug. 31. If you attend this welcome, you should also attend Orientation on September 4. Sign up to attend the Welcome for International Students using the main Orientation sign-up form.

St. Thomas More College Early Orientation

St. Thomas More College Welcome is a free summer orientation day exclusively for new St. Thomas More College students. It's a great way to get a head start on your university experience! If you attend this welcome, you should also attend Orientation on September 4.
