Planning to work in Canada? Not sure how taxes or benefits work in Canada? Start the new school year right by visiting the SIN Clinic and Tax Information Booth at ISSAC! Whether you're a new or returning student, get the support you need with your SIN and learn about tax benefits available to you.
As part of Fall 2025 Welcome, ISSAC is hosting a Social Insurance Number (SIN) Clinic and Tax Information Booth with representatives from Service Canada, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), and the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). Drop in to access services and ask questions — no appointment needed.
🧾 Social Insurance Number (SIN) Clinic
A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a 9-digit number issued by the Government of Canada. You need a SIN to legally work in Canada and to access government programs and services.
To apply for your SIN, please bring:
- Your passport
- Your study permit (must include conditions that allow on- or off-campus work)
Staff from Service Canada will be available to process your application on-site.
💡 Tax Information Booth
Many students don’t realize they may be eligible for tax benefits even if they had little or no income. Visit the CRA information booth to:
- Learn about your tax filing responsibilities as a student
- Get help with CRA My Account setup and updates
- Understand and respond to letters from the CRA
- Ask questions about tax benefits like the GST/HST Credit, Canada Child Benefit, Disability Tax Credit, and more
