WAGS Distinguished Master's Thesis Award

Value

$1,000 USD, a Certificate of Award, and travel expenses for the recipient to attend the WAGS annual conference and awards luncheon.

Eligibility

Each year, the Western Association of Graduate Schools recognizes distinguished scholarly achievement at the Master's level in

  • STEM disciplines (Biological sciences, mathematical sciences, physical sciences, life sciences, and engineering)
  • Non-STEM disciplines (Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, and Business disciplines)
  • Creative, Visual, and Performing Arts (includes capstone projects)

To be eligible for this award, students must have completed their Master’s Degree or Capstone Project between July 1 of the preceding academic year and June 30 of the current academic year (July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024).

DonorWAGS is a regional organization that believes in the power of education for the advancement of people and a global society. Many of our members share a similar political and cultural climate and seem to be impacted in the same way by the changing physical climate. These and other components constitute a community of educators and administrators who support each other in the training of experts who can go out into the world and change it for the better.

The Dean of the College of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, on behalf of the University of Saskatchewan, may put forward one nomination each year for the Award. CGPS will invite departments and colleges to make nominations.

Departments wishing to nominate a student must submit the following nomination package in PDF format online.

Nomination package:

  • A non-technical summary prepared by the nominee (1,000-1,500 words) describing the research and its significance. This summary is intended for a general academic audience of non-specialists.
  • An abstract of the nominee's research (not to exceed 10 double-spaced pages). Appendices containing non-textual material, such as charts and tables, may be included as additional pages. All pages should be numbers, and each should bear the name of the nominee.
  • Two nomination letters (not to exceed 1 page per letter). One letter from the department head or major professor and one letter from additional faculty member. The letters should include information regarding the significance of the thesis/project to the program of the degree granting unit, and the impact of the thesis/project on the knowledge back of the discipline
  • The nominee's curriculum vitae or resume (not to exceed 5 pages)
  • The External Examiner reports*

*The External Examiner reports will be used by the Awards Committee to adjudicate this competition. Please ensure that the Pre-defence Report of the External Examiner (Form 403.1; PhD degree) and the Oral Defence Report of the External Examiner (Form 403.2, Master's & PhD degrees) for the student you wish to nomination are included in the nomination package.
