USask students discuss what menstrual equity means to them

What is period inequity?

Period inequity is often linked to financial and social barriers, and it can be associated with ongoing taboos and stigma around menstruation. UN Women notes that 12.8 per cent of women and girls worldwide live in poverty, and the cost of menstrual products and added taxes leave many without ways to safely manage their periods.

About USask's Period Equity Project

Alleviating period inequity is important to USask. Many have raised awareness about social stigma around menstruation and have voiced their support for enhanced access to menstrual hygiene supplies, including student groups such as Menstruation REDefined University of Saskatchewan and USask Menstrual Project. As well, the USSU Women's Centre and the USask Community Centre have provided free menstrual supplies and period education on campus.

Following consultation with students and student groups at USask, the Office of the Provost and Vice-President Academic initiated the Period Equity Project with the goals of reducing period inequity and enhancing menstrual equity. Free menstrual hygiene supplies will be made available to all members of the USask community in many washrooms across campus, including washrooms designated as women's, men's, and gender neutral.

Dr. Patti McDougall (PhD), deputy provost, talks about how student and academic leaders worked together on the Period Equity Project

The Period Equity Project aligns with the USask plan Fostering Tomorrow's Leaders: Learning, Teaching and the Student Experience 2019-2025. One of the five key commitments championed in the plan is co-creating a climate of inclusion, empowerment, and support. As the plan notes: "We believe that learning is about the whole person and that a supportive environment can uplift people to fulfill their potential. We intend to enhance and maintain wellness, while at the same time mindfully adopt practices that reduce intentional and unintentional harm. We strive for an internationalized learning environment that reflects our diversity, our genuine appreciation for one another, and enables a strong sense of belonging and community."

The Period Equity Project is rooted in the scholarship of women’s and gender studies

The Period Equity Project also aligns with USask's Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Policy. The policy conveys the university's commitment to the principles of diversity, equality, and human dignity, and the values of fairness and equitable treatment, inclusiveness, respect, collegiality, and integrity, honesty, and ethical behaviour.
