Course-based master's and postgraduate diploma programs

Students in course-based programs pay tuition for each class they take. Every class is assigned a number of credit units (usually three) which determines their cost. If a student is not enrolled in any classes for a term, they will need to register in a 'Maintenance of Status' class that is assessed tuition equivalent to 3 credit units to stay in their program.

Graduate students in course-based programs registered in any undergraduate classes will be assessed tuition for these classes at the undergraduate rate. International graduate students in these programs registered in undergraduate courses, whether or not the classes are part of their program of study, will also be assessed the undergraduate international differential rate of 3.0.

Thesis tuition reduction policy

Students who defend their thesis prior to the end of a term may be eligible for a tuition refund. All requirements must be complete (which include the Application to Graduate, all paperwork from academic unit and student, and thesis is successfully submitted through the electronic site). Credits are pro-rated monthly and will be placed on the student's account by Registrarial Services. If you are entitled to a refund, please complete the Request for Refund form. Eligible students can expect to receive the credit on their account approximately one month after completion of requirements. This policy does not apply to course-based or project students. Contact grad.fees@usask.ca for further details.

Tuition and fee notes

  • All graduate students except postgraduate diploma students must maintain continuous registration in their programs. More information can be found in the CGPS Policies and Procedures manual.
  • Tuition fees are assessed at the time a student registers. They are subject to validation for accuracy and correctness at any time by Registrarial Services. If an error is made in assessing a student's account, upon discovery, the student's account will be retroactively reassessed and the student notified of any amount credited or debited, regardless of whether or not the student has completed the class, graduated, or is no longer attending the university.
  • The tuition policy can be found on the Governance Office's website.
  • Student fees are assessed in addition to tuition fees.
  • Student fees are non-refundable after the registration change deadline for a given term. For multi-term classes (classes extending over two terms), students fees are non-refundable after the registration change deadline of the first term in which the class is offered. If a student withdraws from all classes in a term after the registration change deadline, access to the PAC, Fitness Centre, Huskie games, and eligibility to participate in Campus Recreation will discontinue.
  • Students taking courses that are not required for their degrees must pay the full cost of the courses.
  • Graduate students in course-based programs registered in any undergraduate classes will be assessed tuition for these classes at the undergraduate rate. International graduate students in these programs registered in undergraduate courses, whether or not the classes are part of their program of study, will also be assessed the undergraduate international differential of 3.0.
  • Graduate students in thesis/project-based or special tuition programs registered in any undergraduate class which is not part of their program of study will be assessed additional tuition at the undergraduate rate. International graduate students in these programs who are registered in an undergraduate class which is not part of their program will be assessed the additional tuition at the undergraduate rate and the undergraduate international differential of 3.0.
  • Graduate students in thesis/project-based or special tuition programs who have an approved undergraduate class added to their graduate Program of Study may be eligible to have assessed undergraduate tuition removed for that class. Eligible undergraduate class tuition will be removed after the add/drop date but before the payment deadline for the term. Please contact grad.fees@usask.ca if you have any questions.
  • Effective May 1st, 2018, the university will only accept Permanent Resident Cards as proof of permanent residency. International students whose immigration status changes to “permanent resident” will qualify to have their tuition differential reassessed on a pro-rated basis. The differential tuition for the term will be removed if PR status changes as of or before the Payment Deadline. Students who become a permanent resident after the Payment Deadline will have their tuition differential reassessed on a prorated basis starting the first date of the next full month of their change in status (e.g. if the change from international student to PR occurs on Oct 20th, the tuition differential will be prorated and removed effective as of November 1st).
  • Tuition will be waived when a student is on an official leave.
  • Tuition rates are subject to change upon approval of the Board of Governors.
  • Previous years tuition and fee rates can be found in the tuition and fee archive or previous course and program catalogues.
