While we often know a lot about physical illness, there tends to be less knowledge about mental health illnesses. Participants will learn about common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illness, including anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. MHFA prepares participants to interact with a person in crisis and connect them to support.

‘First Aiders’ do not take on the role of professionals – they do not diagnose or provide any counselling or therapy.

Why should you take MHFA:

  • Increase your knowledge of signs, symptoms, and risk factors of the most common mental health illnesses and problems (Mental Health Literacy)
  • Increase your confidence in providing help to others.
  • Increase your knowledge in ‘helping actions’ to support those experiencing a mental health problem.
  • Increase mental wellness in yourself
  • Decrease stigma associated with mental health problems
